BMA Gurlz Ridez Ended for 2010

The sun has set on the 2010 BMA Gurlz Ride Season. Formal group rides will resume in the spring of 2011; most likely April-ish (weather dependent).

Thanks to all the fabulous ride leaders who made this year's rides possible and all the participants who made the season a success!

We will be getting together one more time to celebrate a great spring and summer of gurlz on mountain bikes. It'll be a fun evening for us to see each other without our helmets on and provides a great opportunity to exchange phone numbers and emails with new friends.

Stay tuned to this blog for an update on the End of Season PAR-TAY!!!!

September 23-North Boulder Twilight Ride

This Thursday, September 16th, we are going to ride some relatively mellow North Boulder Trails.

Meet at the Four Mile Creek Trailhead at 5:30 (earlier than usual). The ride will depart promptly at 5:45. It is very likely that we will finish the ride at dusk and everyone must be at least "street legal" with a front light and a red rear reflector or blinkie, as one option for finishing the ride will include a short section of paved road. Sunset is at 7:00 on Thursday evening.

Dinner and drinks will follow TBD.

Important Info about the Rides:

1. All riders MUST wear a helmet, bring water, and have a trail-ready bike. Riders should also carry the usual basics: spare tube(s), a pump, tire levers, a chain tool, and basic Allen wrenches.

2. All riders ride at their own risk, group leaders take no responsibility for rider safety/injury.

3. Riders must sign a liability waiver once during the season. If this is your first ride of the season, please bring a signed waiver with you or be prepared to complete one at the meeting spot.

4. Rides launch at 5:45 PM so be at the trail head by 5:30 PM, dressed and ready to roll by 5:45 PM.

5. If the weather is iffy, make sure to check the blog after 3:00 PM on Thursdays for updated info.

6. Please don't be shy about coming out - all of us love biking and would like to hang out with girls that are interested in biking.

Sept. 2nd Skills Clinic at Lyons Bike Park

Time for another clinic!! We have some EXCELLENT instructors lined up for the clinic this week - Lee McCormack, Kristin Butcher (catzilla) and Tammy Donahugh!!

The session on Thursday will be FREE and open to ALL levels!! We will be working on basic bike handling and pump track skills, which includes, but is not limited to, high-speed cornering, floating over terrain, and you'll learn how to build momentum without pedaling, allowing you to fly up climbs with less effort and generally pick up speed whenever you want. The beauty of a pump track is that beginners, intermediates, and experts can all be challenged, learn and realize something awesome. As an added bonus- Lee will be bringing several signed copies of the newly released 2nd edition of Mastering Mountain Bike Skills!

Please try to carpool! To carpool, meet at 28th and Iris – SE corner next to Sol Azteca at 5:15PM or meet at Sandstone Park by 5:45PM; we will ride over to the bike park together, as it is located out in the middle of a field, the location of which is difficult to describe. If you know where the bike park is, feel free to show up there ready to ride at 6PM. Click here for a map of the bike park; bike park located in the middle of the field west of the High School. Additional parking can be found in Lyons around Sandstone Park (between 3rd and 4th on Railroad Ave).

Dinner and drinks TBD.

    Sourdough Trail

This Thursday, July 1st we are headed up to the mountains to ride the Sourdough Trail off the Peak to Peak Hwy. This trail is a six mile out and back (12 miles total) between the UofC Mountain Research Ctr. and Brainard Lake. This is a challenging ride with lots of rough, rocky terrain. We will break into two groups. Each group will determine how far they go out and back based on the abilities of the group. This will be a great opportunity to work on your technical skills, so don't be shy about coming out.

Meet at The Justice Center parking lot at 6th and Canyon in Boulder to carpool. This will be a late night, so I’d like for all the carpoolers to leave Boulder by 5:15p. I know this time can be a challenge with work schedules, so please plan accordingly and see if you can leave a few minutes early (maybe go in early to make up for it). If you can’t make it to the carpool spot in time, please meet us at the trailhead and be ready to ride at 6:00p. If this is your first ride with us, please print out a liability waiver (below) and bring it with you.

The map isn't very detailed so here are the driving directions:
From the intersection of Broadway and Canyon in Boulder, go 16 miles west up Canyon Road (Highway 119) to Nederland (you could also take Sugarloaf Rd to the Peak to Peak Hwy). Take the second exit from the traffic circle, heading north on CO 72/Peak to Peak Highway and go 7 miles north. Turn left onto County Road116 (there is a sign for the University of Colorado Research Station at this point) go about .5 mile to the parking lot on the left, trail starts across the road. (Map)

It might be difficult to get back in time for dinner, so we’ll play this by ear……

This Thursday, June 24 we will head south and tackle White Ranch. As with past rides, we will break into 2 or 3 groups. Everyone will meet at the lower White Ranch Trail Head off Pine Ridge Road. To get there, take Highway 93 south from Boulder toward Golden. After the stoplight at W. 58th Avenue, take your first right onto 56th Avenue. Follow 56th until it Ts at a stop sign, and take a right. The parking lot will be just ahead.

First, I need to ask for a few volunteers to help out with this ride. We lost some of our regulars for this week, so we are short on leaders and sweepers for additional groups. If anyone is familiar with the Belcher Hill trail and would like to lead or sweep, feel free to email or post in the comments.

One group, those of you with experience riding White and feeling sprightly, will make its way all the way up Belcher Hill. Make no mistake, this is a serious slog, so don't worry if you're not feeling up to it--there will be other opportunities to bust a lung. This group will probably descend one of the more technical trails back to the bottom, so if you are not comfortable riding down the Bitterbrush trail at Hall Ranch, it may be better to join one of the other groups for the day. We will break into one or two more groups which can spin up Belcher for as long as they like, then head back the same way (the ride down is fun!)

If you would like to carpool, please meet at the Whole Foods parking lot (Broadway and Baseline) at 5:15PM.

Dinner and drinks TBD after the ride.

    Important info about the rides:

    1. All riders MUST wear a helmet, bring water and bring a trail ready bike. Riders should also carry the usual basics; spare tube, a pump, tire lever, a chain tool and basic Allen wrenches.
    2. All riders ride at their own risk. Ride leaders take no responsibility for rider safety/injury.
    3. Riders must sign a liability waiver once during the season. If this is your first ride of the season please bring a signed copy of the waiver to the ride or be prepared to sign one at the meeting spot.
    4. Rides launch at 6:00PM, so please be at the ride spot at 5:45PM, dressed and ready to roll at 6:00PM.
    5. If the weather is iffy please make sure to check the blog at 3:00PM on Thursdays for updated info.
    6. Please don't be shy about coming out. All of us love biking and would like to hang out with girls that are interested in biking.
    7. For planning purposes, please post your name in the comments section if you plan on joining us. The comments section is also great for planning carpools, etc. If you cannot access the blog post, let us know you will be there by emailing us at the email below

Great Ride at Walker and Myers

Sixteen ladies came out for a beautiful evening to ride Walker and Myers. It was one of the best rides I've had this season! Super fun trail, super fun group! Here are some pics. You should come out this week for the ride at White ranch (if you are a girl).

    Walker Ranch/Myers Homestead

This Thursday, June 17 we will take advantage of the long days and ride Walker Ranch and Myers Homestead . As with past rides, we will break into 2 or 3 groups. We will meet at the main Walker Ranch Trail Head off Flagtaff Road (not the Myers Homestead Trail Head the group met at the last time).

One group, those of you with experience riding Walker and feeling zesty, will make its way around the entire 8 mile loop. Don't let distances deceive you; this trail will take a fast moving group until almost dark to complete without any mechanicals! At least one other group will take it easier and ride the connector between Walker and Myers Homestead, riding out on as far as the group wants and then coming back the same way. If we have enough ladies, a third group may head out part of the way on the Walker loop, turn around and head back the way they came in time to finish by 8:15PM.

If you would like to carpool, please meet at the Baseline/Broadway Whole Foods parking lot at 5:25PM.

Following the ride, we will have dinner and drinks at Larkburger on Arapahoe.

    Obviously, the ride is canceled
However, we have something else planned for the night. Tracy has graciously offered to host us at her home for a potluck and a special viewing of “Women of Dirt” (courtesy of Jen). If you were at the Lyon’s Pump Track way back in April, you were introduced to Tammy Donahugh. She is in this awesome film about talented women on two wheels and the lifestyles they lead to allow them to ride.

Please email us at bmagirls.rideleader@gmail.com if you are interested in coming and we will send you Tracy’s address.

Byob and remember to bring a dish to share.

    See you there!

    Rainout, Schmainout

The rain put a damper on Thursday's ride (get it? damper? okay, we'll just pretend that didn't happen).

But we've got a long summer of rides, dirt-covered shins, post-ride beers (that can never arrive soon enough), exploring new trails with old friends and old trails with new friends, and finally learning how to go over the rock by the tree with the root. And of course there's always the riding with more female mountain bikers than most folks thought existed.

Our turnouts this year are incredible and have as many new faces as familiar ones. We break into groups based on skill/endurance so that everyone can choose their pace. To keep the groups small, we're looking for volunteers of all skill levels to lead or sweep the groups. No experience is necessary, and you definitely don't have to be a stellar rider. If you are interested in helping out, email bmagirls.rideleader@gmail.com and let us know if you're interested in leading/sweeping the speedsters, intermediates and/or beginners.

In other news: Get psyched for next Thursday's ride at Heil by watching Follow Me on the big screen at Boulder Theater. BMA's Film Night is happening next Wednesday, April 28th, tickets are 15 bucks, and all proceeds go towards benefiting BMA's "Better Trails for Boulder County" efforts. This is a great chance to get dolled up (you know, like wearing something that doesn't have a chamois) and have a little dirt-free fun. Of course, we may have to put our skills clinic name tags back on, since it might be impossible to recognize each other without dirt on our faces.

This event usually sells out. For more details or to buy tickets, click here.

April 15th - Great Turn Out at Hall Ranch

What a fantastic night to ride!! Last Thursday, April 15th, 31 ladies met up in Lyons to ride Hall Ranch. Considering the large number of ladies who were ready to rock it, we broke up into three smallish groups; two groups rode up the Antelope Trail side and one brave group rode up the Bitterbrush Trail side. We worked on switchback technique, rocky climbing technique and descending body positioning. Although it was cloudy, the temps were perfect for riding! All three groups reconvened at the end of the ride back down in Lyons, and several gurlz enjoyed dinner and drinks at Sol Azteca back in Boulder after the ride. WAHOO! good times!

Check out more of the pictures from the ride.

Next week's ride will be at Marshall Mesa; check back at the blog for details soon.

We are looking for some additional ladies to help lead and sweep the 'beginner' rides. We will do all the leg work to set you up to know where to ride, what to bring and how to lead and sweep; all you need is enthusiasm! Please contact us at bmagirls.rideleader@gmail.com if you are interested.

Celebrate (or Mourn) Tax Day at Hall Ranch!

This Thursday, April 15th we are taking our feminine wiles to Hall Ranch. Meet at Sandstone Park (across from Oskar Blues), from there we’ll break into two groups. The beginner/intermediates will hit up the Antelope side at a casual pace while the intermediate/advanced riders will rock the boulders (get it?) on the burly Bitterbrush side.

Meet at Sandstone Park in Lyons at 5:45PM, and be ready to ride at 6PM. To carpool from Boulder, meet at 28th and Iris (the SE corner next to Sol Azteca) at 5:15PM.

    Dinner and drinks will follow...somewhere.

Huge turnout for first rideof the 2010 season!

32 ladies came out last Thursday for our first ride of the 2010 - a bike skills clinic held at the Lyons Bike Park. Thanks so much to Tammy Donahugh, a Front Range freeride/dirt jump professional, and our own Kristin for their excellent instruction. Kudos also to Tracy and Jenifer for assisting and for Megan for taking photos! And thanks to all the gurlz who showed up eager to learn - it was a great night!

Our next ride is Thursday, April 15th. Check back here at the blog for an update on location and logistics.

    2010 Rides Starting Up!

DESPITE THE SNOW, WE ARE STILL PLANNING TO HAVE THE SKILLS CLINIC APRIL 8th, ASSUMING IT WILL MELT IN TIME. Please check back Thursday after 3:00 pm for final verification.

It's almost spring and therefore time for us to get riding! We have laid out an excellent season of weekly rides and clinics for all levels of female mountain bikers, building on the success we had with last year's group and making some improvements to hopefully make the rides better for all of you.

Our rides are held every Thursday starting in the spring and running through August/September. All rides are NO DROP - you will never be left behind to find your way back to the trail head! Rides begin at 6:00pm and end before dark, so you will not need lights. We follow each ride up on a social level, eating dinner at a variety of local establishments.

This year we plan to offer a beginner option on every ride. Toward that end, we are looking for beginner riders who would like to lead or sweep other beginners. We will teach you what you need to know to lead or sweep. Please contact us at bmagirls.rideleader@gmail.com if you are interested.

Next week (Wednesday, March 24th at 7:00 pm), we will be at the Boulder Outdoor Divas for their Bike Tech Talk. This is a great opportunity to learn some basic bike repair skills from female bike mechanics and hear about more our BMA Gulrz Ridez as well as other women-only riding opportunities in the Boulder area.

Our first weekly ride will be held on April 8th at 6:00pm. This will be a skills clinic held at the Lyons Bike Park. This will be a great opportunity to refresh your brain and muscles! The session on Thursday will be FREE and open to ALL levels!! We will be working on basic skills on flat ground, the pump track and other park features. You will learn body position, how to get over objects and how to build momentum without pedaling, allowing you to fly up climbs with less effort and generally pick up speed whenever you want. Once again, this session will be geared to all levels!

The bike park is located in Lyons, southwest of the Middle and Senior High School off 2nd Avenue, south of the river.

Please try to carpool! To carpool, meet at 28th and Iris – SE corner next to Sol Azteca at 5:15pm or meet at Sandstone Park in Lyons by 5:45pm; we will ride over to the bike park together, as it is located out in the middle of a field. If you know where the bike park is, feel free to show up there ready to ride at 6pm. Additional parking can be found in Lyons around Sandstone Park (between 3rd and 4th on Railroad Ave).

Dinner and drinks will follow. PLEASE make a comment on the blog letting us know if you will be coming to the clinic and if you will be staying for dinner! THANKS!

    4. Rides launch at 6:00pm so be at the trail head by 5:45pm, dressed and ready to roll by 6:00pm.

    5. If the weather is iffy, make sure to check the blog after 3:00pm on Thursdays for updated info.

    6. For permitting and planning purposes, please post your name in the comment field if you plan to join us. The comment field is also great for planning carpools, etc.

Please don't be shy about coming out - all of us love biking and would like to hang out with girls that are interested in biking.

Send us an email if you have any questions – bmagirls.rideleader@gmail.com

Hope to see you on the 8th!
